Islamist militants in Mali are reacting sharply to military intervention by the French against them.

France, the former colonial ruler of Mali, launched the operation on Friday at the request of the Malian government. The militants controlling the country’s north recently began pushing south.

One of the militant groups warned on Saturday that the intervention will put all French nationals living in the Islamic world in harm’s way.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said air strikes continued for a second day on Saturday with hundreds of troops being deployed.

He also revealed that a French helicopter was downed, leaving a pilot dead.

The Malian government said the town of Konna, in the center of the country, had been recaptured from the Islamist forces.

The French operation is believed to be primarily aimed at stopping their advance into the south.

It will take some time before an international force involving Mali’s neighbors is formed and launches fully- formed operations.
