Sudanese army announces 100 rebel casualties in South Darfur State
The Sudanese army announced Saturday it killed or injured some 100 rebels of the Darfur armed movements in South Darfur State.
“After monitoring groups of rebels at Um Kanja and Abga Ragil areas in South Darfur State, the armed forces moved from Galdi and Kashalango areas, attacked the rebels and inflicted heavy loss on them,” Sudanese army spokesman Al-Sawarmy Khalid Saad said in a statement.
“As the armed forces were returning to their bases, the rebels ambushed them, but the armed forces repulsed them, destroyed 14 of their vehicles and killed and injured around 100 rebels in the two battles,” added Saad.
He reiterated the armed forces’ readiness to deal with any disorder in the area, noting that a number of armed forces members were killed and others wounded.
He went on saying that a number of armed forces members were also missing, pointing out that efforts were underway to find them.
Violence has mounted in Sudan’s Darfur region during the past months, which pushed the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to urge the conflicting parties to avoid whatever may threaten the peace in the restive region.
Early this month, South Darfur State witnessed tribal clashes between Al-Gimir and Bani Halba tribes, which resulted in the death of many people.
Similar clashes also recently took place in Sudan’s North Darfur State between Bani Hussein and Rizaigat tribes, leaving tens of people dead from both sides, and pushing the state government to intervene to contain the situation.
