Abbas in Morocco to attend Jerusalem committee meeting
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas arrived on Thursday in the Moroccan resort Marrakech to attend the 20th session of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) committee which will be held on Friday and Saturday in Marrakech under the patronage of King Muhammad VI.
The meeting will be chaired by Moroccan King and attended by foreign ministers of the committee’s member states along with the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council and officials from European Union, the United Nations, the Vatican and the Arab League.
The Palestinian President is accompanied by a high-level delegation including senior negotiator Saeb Erekat and spokesman of the Palestinian President Nabil Abu Rudeina.
Founded on the recommendation of the Sixth Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers of Member States of the Organization of the Islamic Conference held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in June, 1975, the purpose of Jerusalem committee is to support Muslim claims to Jerusalem and the upkeep of its Islamic holy places, together with the welfare of the Palestinian population and their aspirations to a state with Jerusalem as its capital.
