EthiopiaPolice in Switzerland have detained the co-pilot of a passenger plane operated by Ethiopian Airlines for hijacking the aircraft.

Flight 702 left the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa early Monday morning for Rome, but the plane was diverted to Geneva after sending a signal that it had been hijacked.

The aircraft made an emergency landing, after which the co-pilot was detained at the airport. The about 200 passengers and crewmembers are safe.

Investigators say the hijacker was seeking asylum in Switzerland.

He reportedly locked the cockpit from the inside while the pilot was in the restroom and changed the plane’s destination.

Video footage shows landing stairways attached to the plane and security officials deployed.

The incident briefly forced the airport to close.
