IHS Jane’s 360: Splits within Polisario Front likely to undermine Western Saharan governance and security
The Polisario Front is facing an unprecedented challenge to its leadership of the Sahrawi independence movement in Western Sahara.
This comes at a time of increasing disillusionment among Sahrawi people over the lack of progress towards a promised referendum on self-determination.
Attacks by the new Sahrawi groups are likely to focus on Polisario assets and personnel, rather than commercial targets in Western Sahara.
Growing challenges to the Polisario Front’s leadership of Western Sahara’s Sahrawi national liberation movement have emerged, manifesting in an increasing number of protests in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf province, western Algeria, and the emergence of at least one splinter group actively opposed to Polisario control.
