Obama to strengthen air strikes against militants
US President Barack Obama has expressed his intention to strengthen air strikes against the militant group Islamic State. But he reaffirmed that he doesn’t intend to send American troops into combat.
Obama made the remarks to troops at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida on Wednesday. Earlier, he was briefed by officers at US Central Command on the country’s military efforts in the Middle East.
Referring to Islamic State militants, Obama said terrorists that threaten America will find no safe haven, whether in Iraq or in Syria.
He said, however, that the American forces which have been deployed to Iraq do not and will not have a combat mission. Obama said they will support Iraqi forces on the ground.
He said the United States will use its air power.
Obama said his country is not going to do this alone. He said more than 40 countries have offered assistance to the broad campaign against the militant group.
