France says it has started airstrikes against the Islamic State militant group in Iraq.

The president’s office said on Friday that 2 Rafale fighter jets left a base in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in the morning and destroyed a facility of the Islamic State on the outskirts of Mosul, the 2nd largest city in Iraq.

The office said air strikes will continue.

On Thursday, President Francois Hollande announced that France accepted a request from Iraq and decided to provide support from the air. But, he ruled out the possibility of sending ground troops.

Hollande also stressed that France will only be involved in targeting the Islamic State in Iraq. The US has also been conducting airstrikes in Iraq against the Islamic State, and it plans to expand operations to neighboring Syria.
