The Africa Cup of Nations: Controversial stories about the final Tour after the defeat of Algeria and Tunisia
Things are looking dicey in Equatorial Guinea for Africa’s top-ranked team and the CAN favourites.
Algeria lost their second game at the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations, played Friday (January 23rd) in Mongomo. Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan scored the lone match goal in added time. (90′ + 3′).
The Greens needed only a draw to ensure a place in the second round. Now they are tied with Ghana on three points in Group C.
he Greens are reeling from the surprise defeat, but say that circumstances were more difficult than expected. Rafik Halliche was side-lined by injury, and coach Christian Gourcuff’s mother died the day before the game.
Midfielder Nabil Bentaleb, who also plays for English side Tottenham Hotspur, admitted the difficulty of the task. “We put ourselves in a very awkward position, and must show our will to repair what we messed up,” he said.
Algeria play group leaders Senegal on Tuesday. A win means they advance to the next round. A draw also keeps them alive, but only if South Africa defeat Ghana on Tuesday.
“Our destiny is in our hands; we have no excuse and we will strive to qualify,” said attacking midfielder Yacine Brahimi.
But the Greens just learned that they will have to play Senegal without top striker Islam Slimani. He suffered an injury during the Ghana clash and missed practice on Saturday.
The other Maghreb team at CAN play today, Tunisia lead Group B with four points, only a step away from the quarter-finals.
A tie against Congo on Monday will be enough for them to move to the next stage of the tourney.
