Japan Urged to Recognize Palestinian Statehood

The Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki has called on Japan and other major powers to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, and to help it resume dialogue with Israel.

Speaking to NHK during a visit to Tokyo, Malki said he is not optimistic about a resumption of peace talks. He accused the prime minister of Israel of “abusing and manipulating” negotiations, and said he did not consider Benjamin Netanyahu to be a partner of peace.

Malki added that “frustration and disappointment for the lack of a solution” might push youngsters across the Arab world to adopt a hardline position.

More than 130 countries have already recognized Palestine as a sovereign state, including Sweden. Malki said he hopes this European example will lead Japan to reevaluate its position.
