Argentine soccer legend Diego Armando Maradona visited the Moroccan city of Marrakech on the eve of the gala match in which he will take part on Friday, amid the festivities of the 40th anniversary of Morocco’s Green March in Laayoune, capital of the Western Sahara.
Maradona’s arrival to Marrakech on Wednesday overwhelmed the Moroccan press, which published several photos of the star with his daughter, his fans and his agent Karim Balk.
In an interview with the state’s television, Maradona said “This is my first visit to Morocco, and will not be the last.
“I like the charm of the Moroccan people, which you cannot buy with all the money in the world.”
Balk told press that Maradona will participate in Friday’s gala game without getting paid, thanks to their excellent relations.
The Argentinean legend was invited to play the game along with several Moroccan and international retired soccer stars, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Morocco’s Green March,
The match will include retired Moroccan soccer stars Mustapha Hadji and Noureddine Naybet, as well as other international former players such as Italy’s Alessandro Altobelli and Francesco Toldo, Brazil’s Gilberto Silva and Edison and the Uruguayan Daniel Fonseca.
Among the African stars who will reportedly visit Laayoune and participate in the gala game are Ghanaian Abide Pele, Liberia’s George Weah and Egyptian player Mohamed Abou-Trika.
