Moroccan King Mohammad VI dispatched on Tuesday Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane and minister delegate for foreign affairs Nacer Bourita to Mauritanian president Mohammad Ould Abdulaziz.

A statement by the Royal cabinet stated that  the Moroccan King asked Benkirane to clear up any misunderstanding that could have a negative impact on the excellent relations between Morocco and Mauritania.

Their dispatch followed a statement by Hamid Chabat, the secretary general of the right wing party al- Istiqlal (independence party)  who expressed earlier in the day that  “historically, Mauritania was part of Morocco.”,

These remarks from Istiqlal party’s leader  quickly drew a rebuke from Mauritania’s ruling Union for the Republic Party (UPR), which called on Chabat to apologize for the statement.

the Moroccan sovereign phoned the Mauritanian president and discussed bilateral ties.

During this phone call, King Mohammad VI reiterated to Ould Abdelaziz his unwavering support and friendship, as well as his attachment to the good neighborliness and solidarity relation between the two countries, based on the long-standing and family relations which have always existed between the two peoples, the statement added.

The Moroccan king also reassured that Morocco recognizes the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, pursuant to international law, it noted.

The two leaders also expressed their determination to preserve this relation against any attempt seeking to undermine it, regardless of its origin and motives
