DRC: No revision of the presidential term

By on April 19, 2010

Last month, an inter-institutional committee had proposed to review the president mandate. According to their thinking, they had agreed on the need to amend certain provisions of the Constitution and electoral law in order, they contend, to refocus around certain key requirements, including the President mandate, the territorial division, the judiciary independence, the High Council of Magistracy, the provincial institutions, the electoral system, immunities, the political regime, and the extension of the military jurisdiction.
But members of the National Alliance for the Presidential Majority (AMP) in the DRC lower house of parliament, opposed the revision of the mandate of President Joseph Kabila, reported the Congolese News Agency (ACP). “There is no place we can revisit the mandate of the President of the Republic,” said Albert Pwela, president of the group.
