Morocco: Mohammed VI Green City Gives Impetus to Modernity-Sustainable Development Megaproject

Mohammed VI Green City’s project offers convenient infrastructure, an ecological space and a life style that ensures well-being, diversity, and social and cultural welfare for its inhabitants. The city will be developed around the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, a private institution with international dimensions, and which will be the engine of development for the green city.

This educational facility rests on different fundamentals including education, research and development, transfer of technologies, the adoption of innovative and promising projects as well as the proximity with the corporate world.

The future university, which will be built in two phases, mobilizes significant human and financial resources to provide students with a better grasp of today’s globalized world and expose them to foreign cultures. It includes several schools with various disciplines (industrial management, engineering, dry- land farming, green technologies and sustainable development, town planning and architecture, business and management, governance and public administration, and health sciences).

One of the main components of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is the Industrial Management School, a training institution which aspires to provide the Moroccan industrial market with highly qualified managerial skills. The school will focus on theoretical courses to be consolidated by field training, in addition to individual and group projects.

The University will be endowed by high quality and distinguished national and international faculty members with different backgrounds and expertise. A 23-ha faculty housing project will be developed, which includes villas, recreation facilities, and shopping centers.

The opening of the university will be strengthened by the partnerships it will concludes with prestigious international institutions such as the Ecole des Mines de Paris, HEC-Paris and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the United States .

In this regard, HM the King chaired the signing ceremony of two agreements, the first was signed between the Ministry of Higher Education and Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), and the second is a framework agreement on cooperation between the école nationale supérieure des mines de Paris and the OCP.

Besides pedagogical and academic aspects, a special effort was made in terms of the architectural and aesthetic choices of the future city to preserve the complementarity and coherence between all parts of the project supported by the OCP.

In order to ensure the connection and integration between the Mohammed VI green city and the existing city of Benguerir, a green lane of 4 km has been designed. The lane, called Coulée verte, will cover 80 hectares where over 50,000 trees will be planted. King Mohammed VI has planted a tree as a symbolic launch of the green lane project.
