The head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa could spread further with the end of the rainy season.

The Ebola virus has infected and killed thousands of people in West Africa, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Mali reported its first death from the disease last month.

CDC director Thomas Frieden testified at a subcommittee of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

He said that with the end of the rainy season, other parts of West Africa may be at increased risk due to an influx of travelers from the affected countries.

He said the international community must step up support to contain the Ebola outbreak.

Frieden noted that more than 2,000 people have entered the US from West Africa since late October, and that no one has been infected.

US authorities are calling for travelers from the 4 most heavily affected countries to take their temperatures every day for 3 weeks after their arrival and report to state health officials.

Public concern is mounting in the United States over the spread of Ebola. On Monday, a man who contracted the virus in Sierra Leone died at a hospital in the state of Nebraska
