Gunmen have killed at least 14 people in a shooting spree at a university in Kenya.

Local police say the university campus in the eastern city of Garissa was attacked by a group of armed men in the early hours of Thursday, local time.

The gunmen reportedly forced their way into a dormitory for students, firing indiscriminately.

The Reuters news agency is reporting – citing police at the scene – that the 14 victims include 2 police officers.

Red Cross officials in Kenya say an unknown number of students are being held hostage.

Images from the scene show police and military vehicles rushing to the campus where loud gunshots were heard.

Kenya has suffered a series of suicide bomb and other attacks by Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, based in neighboring Somalia.
