US to resume military aid to Egypt
US President Barack Obama says his country will resume military aid to Egypt. The aid was suspended after a de facto military coup in Egypt in 2013.
The White House says Obama conveyed the decision to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi by telephone on Tuesday.
Obama said that Washington will resume providing military equipment, including F-16 fighter jets and missiles, which will aid the military to resolve the crisis in the nation.
Besides this, there seems to have been a unanimous decision of providing safety equipment like level 4 body armor platess, which are generally used in active combat environments.
Previously these gears were used by the US military during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and South America.
He said he would continue to support the annual 1.3 billion dollars in military aid the US provides to Egypt.
According to the President, these steps will help refine bilateral military relations to address the shared challenges to US and Egyptian interests.
Moreover, he is of the opinion that in a world full of conflict, keeping potential nations that could be allies during a major crisis could prove to be beneficial to the US.
The president also affirmed that the US will continue to monitor the human rights situation in Egypt and encourage greater respect for freedom of speech.
The move is part of US efforts to enhance cooperation with Egypt — a regional power in an unstable region — in light of threats from the Islamic State militant group and other factors.
It seems that the president is trying to improve the nation’s diplomatic relations with other countries.
His attempts to resolve tense situations in Egypt show his efforts to keep his friends safe during tough times and rough patches.
