A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Shiite mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia on Friday in the village of al-Qadeeh, according to media reports.

Local residents said the explosion killed and wounded at least 30 people. It took place at the Imam Ali mosque in the town of al-Qadeeh, Qatif province.

Witnesses described a huge blast at the mosque as they were doing the first part of the Friday prayers, the source added.

The Saudi state news agency has confirmed the explosion had occurred in east of the country and said more details would be provided later.

Pictures and videos posted on social media showed body parts scattered across the mosque’s floor.

The al-Qadeeh town is home to Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority, in a country which is predominantly Sunni. Shiites makes up around 10-15 per cent of the Saudi population.

In late March Houthi rebels from Yemen threatened to carry out suicide bombings in Saudi Arabia if the latter continues with its air campaign against their positions. But, Houthis are also Shiite Muslims, like those reported to be killed in the suicide attack.
