UN Security Council, US Urge Mali To Swiftly Probe Killing Of 6 Peacekeepers
The UN Security Council has called on the Government of Mali to swiftly investigate the deadly terrorist attack on a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), and bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that those responsible for the attack should be held accountable.
The United States also called on the Government of Mali to immediately investigate the incident and hold those responsible to account.
In a statement condemning the attack, the members of the Council underlined that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. They also reiterated their full support to MINUSMA and the French forces that support it.
The attack on Thursday against a MINUSMA convoy near Timbuktu, northern Mali, resulted in the death of six peacekeepers and the injury of five other peacekeepers, all from Burkina Faso.
This attack brings the total number of casualties from hostile acts since the beginning of MINUSMA deployment in 2013 to 42 peacekeepers killed, and 166 peacekeepers wounded.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reminded all parties that attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a serious violation of international law, and urged all those responsible to be brought swiftly to justice.
MINUSMA chief Mongi Mamdi had also strongly condemned the attack and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
