King Mohammed VI Discusses Bilateral Relations With Donald Trump in Phone Call
King Mohammed VI held a phone meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, according to an official communiqué of the Moroccan royal cabinet.
During the interaction, the Moroccan monarch again congratulated Trump on his election win, and took the opportunity to discuss strategic partnership.
“His Majesty the King and the president-elect have agreed to reinforce strong, profound and multidimensional strategic partnerships that unite both countries,” the communiqué stated.
King Mohammed VI was among the first heads of state to congratulate Trump following the November 8 elections, and Morocco and the U.S. have a long history of bilateral partnership.
Most notably, Morocco was the very first country to recognize the United States as an independent nation. Morocco is also one of the few non-NATO major allies to the U.S, and is among a handful of countries that maintain a Free Trade Agreement with the U.S.
The North African country has continued to be one of America’s closest allies since the 1787 Treaty of Peace and Friendship which officially solidified bilateral relations.
Following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, Morocco played a pivotal role in the American war on terror. Cooperation between the two countries’ intelligence services reached unprecedented levels.
Analysts say Morocco is likely to play an important role in Donald Trump’s strategy to defeat terrorism and the so-called Islamic State.
In recent years, the North African country has branded itself as a bulwark against extremism and terrorism, as well as a model in the fight against this phenomenon.
Thanks to Morocco’s multilayered strategy, the country has remained virtually immune to acts of terrorism and has distinguished itself as the only country in the MENA region that has been effective in combatting potential terrorists and foiling terrorist plots.
